Using AI in your business

Start Using Claude for Your Business in One Afternoon

Not what AI can theoretically do — the four jobs it actually does well for a small business

Most business owners I speak to have opened an AI tool once, typed something vague, got something generic back, and quietly decided it was not for them. That is a fair conclusion from that experience. It is also the wrong one.

The problem is almost never the tool. It is that people ask it to be creative when what they actually need is for it to do a specific job with information only they have.

The one habit that changes everything

Compare these two requests.

“Write me an Instagram caption for my bakery.” You will get something with an emoji, the word delicious, and five hashtags. It could belong to any bakery on earth, which is exactly why it is useless.

“I run a small bakery in Antalya. Most customers are families who come at weekends. We just started doing custom birthday cakes with 48 hours’ notice, starting at 400 lira. Write three Instagram captions announcing it, in a warm everyday voice, no hashtags, no emoji.” Now you get something you can almost use.

The difference is not the wording. It is that the second one contains what you know and the machine does not: who buys, what is new, what it costs, how you talk. That is the whole skill. Everything else is detail.

Four jobs worth starting with

1. Turning one idea into a month of posts

Give it a topic you could talk about for ten minutes, say who your customers are, and ask for twelve post ideas with the hook written out for each. Then pick the four you actually like and ask it to write those properly. You are using it to get past the blank page, not to replace you.

2. Writing the thing you keep putting off

The service description. The about page. The reply to the customer who complained. These are not hard, they are just unpleasant enough to postpone for three weeks. Describe the situation honestly, including what you want the outcome to be, and get a first draft in a minute. The draft will not be right. It will be close enough to fix, which is the part that was blocking you.

3. Making sense of what you already have

Paste in your last three months of sales, or your messy notes from customer conversations, and ask what patterns it sees. Not for a decision — for a second pair of eyes on information you are too close to read properly.

4. Being asked hard questions before a customer asks them

Describe your offer and ask it to argue against buying. It will produce the objections you have been avoiding. Better to meet them on a screen than across a table.

Where it will let you down

I would rather tell you this now than have you find out in front of a client.

  • It can be confidently wrong. Anything factual — prices, dates, laws, statistics, what a competitor charges — check it. It does not know when it is guessing.
  • Unedited, it has a smell. People recognise AI writing now, and it costs you trust. Always rewrite at least a few lines in your own words.
  • It does not know your business. It knows what you told it in that conversation. That is all.
  • Do not paste in things you would not email. Customer data, passwords, contracts you do not own. Treat it like a capable stranger, because that is what it is.

Used properly, it does not replace you. It removes the hour of staring at an empty screen before you start.

What to do this afternoon

Pick the one task you have postponed longest — the service page, the month of posts, the email you owe someone. Write out everything you know about it in plain language, including who it is for and how you want to sound. Then ask for a first draft.

Keep what is useful. Rewrite the rest. That is the whole method, and it works from the first try.
